Frequently asked questions

What City Tours Europe is, how to find a guide and arrange a tour.

Here we answer the questions travellers ask us most often. For anything about a specific tour, the city’s guide is the person to contact.

About City Tours Europe

What is City Tours Europe?

A directory of independent, professional tour guides in cities across Germany, Switzerland and Europe, in five languages: English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. Travellers find a guide for a private tour here and contact the guide directly.

Is City Tours Europe a tour operator or a booking platform?

No. City Tours Europe is neither a tour operator nor a travel agency nor an intermediary; we take no bookings and receive no commission. The contract for a tour is made directly between you and the guide.

Who runs City Tours Europe?

City Tours Europe is run by Project Management Partners Vohl & Partner, a partnership company based in Bernried am Starnberger See, Bavaria, Germany. Full details are in the legal notice.

How are the guides selected? Are they qualified?

All guides on City Tours Europe belong to a selected network of professional city and tour guides in Europe's cities: City Tours Europe is that network. Many of our guides have passed an examination set by their city, a chamber of commerce or a professional association, for example as official guides of the City of Munich, with the chamber of commerce (IHK) certificate in Berlin or as a licensed guide in Dresden. Each guide's qualification is shown on their page under "Your guide".

Before we present a guide, we also check that they exist, that they guide in the language of their page and that their contact details are correct.

Booking and contact

How do I book a city tour?

On the city page, "Your guide" shows how to reach the guide. You write to or call the guide directly and agree on the topic, date, length and price.

Can I book or send an enquiry through City Tours Europe?

No. Any enquiry that reaches us could only be passed on to the guide. It is quicker to write to the guide directly.

Does City Tours Europe see my enquiry? What happens to my data?

No. Email links open your own email program, and your message goes straight to the guide. This website sets no cookies and does not track visitors. Details are in the privacy policy.

How far in advance should I contact a guide?

As early as possible, once your travel dates are set. In high season, on public holidays and during major trade fairs or festivals, good guides are often booked weeks ahead. A last-minute request is still worth a try: write to the guide, who will tell you what is available.

Prices and terms

How much does a private city tour cost?

Each guide sets their own price. Where a guide states prices, you will find them with the tour in question. City Tours Europe adds nothing on top and receives no commission.

How do I pay for the tour?

Directly to the guide, on the guide's terms.

What about cancellations or arriving late?

Each guide sets their own cancellation and payment terms. Ask about them when you arrange the tour, and ideally have them confirmed by email. If you are running late on the day, call or message the guide. The contact details are on the guide's page under "Your guide".

Do the guides pay to be listed?

Yes. Each guide pays a fixed annual fee for their city, regardless of how many tours the website brings them. So we earn nothing from your booking and have no reason to recommend one guide over another. For each city and language, we present exactly one guide.

The tours

What is the difference between a private tour and a group tour?

A private tour follows your interests and the time you have: two hours to find your bearings on arrival, a themed day, one neighbourhood, a museum, a bike tour. It suits couples, families and small groups.

In which languages are tours available?

City Tours Europe is published in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. Each page presents a guide who leads tours in the language of that page. Many guides work in several languages. If you need another language, ask the guide: often more is possible than the website shows.

In which cities are there guides?

You can currently find English-speaking guides in these cities:

More cities are added as the guides approve their pages. The pages in the other languages sometimes list further cities.

Are there tours for school classes, companies or larger groups?

Yes, school classes, clubs and company groups can also arrange a tour with our guides. Each guide decides how large a group may be and what the tour then costs; some state a maximum on their page. For large groups, the guide will split the group if needed or recommend colleagues. Say in your enquiry how many people are coming.

Are the tours accessible?

That depends on the city and the route. The advantage of a private tour is that the guide can adapt it to your pace and your needs, for example with shorter distances, breaks to sit down or step-free access where it exists. Tell the guide what you need when you get in touch, and the tour will be planned accordingly.
